Empowering
Multicultural Initiatives (E.M.I.), a project
of EDCO Collaborative, specializes in anti-racist
education by establishing the values of racial
harmony in schools in order to benefit students,
teachers, administration, and the larger community.
The mission of Empowering Multicultural Initiatives
(E.M.I.) is to improve the academic achievement
of students of color while nurturing the growth
and development of all students, and to promote
systemic anti-racist practices and culturally
relevant teaching through staff training and leadership
development.
E.M.I. facilitators work with schools and educators
to help develop and implement effective anti-racist
practices and programs. Empowering Multicultural
Initiatives (E.M.I.) seeks to establish anti-racist
school climates that offer excellence and equity
for all students.

- Hour (2 credit courses through Framingham State
College):
Talking About Race
and its Impact on Academic Achievement
This graduate level
course is designed to introduce educators to the
complex issues raised by race and racism and their
impact on student learning and achievement. The
course will encourage educators to recognize the
link between self-awareness and professional development
as a component of providing equity to all students.
*Creating Culturally
Proficient Classrooms and Schools – EMI
1 is a prerequisite for this course
This graduate level
course uses group process, racial/cultural identity
theory, and research in cultural dimensions to
develop culturally proficient classroom/school
practices.
Understanding Discrimination and Its Effect on
Academic Achievement
EMI Course for Administrators
This graduate level course is designed to bring
together administrators (new and experienced)
to form a cohort group to share ideas on creating/supporting
school environments that support the academic
achievement and engagement of all students.
12 - Hour (1-credit Modules through Framingham
State College):
*Indicates that EMI 1 is a prerequisite for participation
in that particular course
Difficult Conversations: Talking About Race and
Racism
This course will consider the experience of students
and families from ethnically or racially diverse
backgrounds in predominantly white schools. Participants
will examine both the barriers to /challenges
of talking about race/racism/ethnicity and strategies
for engaging in productive discussions when issues
of race, racism, and ethnicity arise in the curriculum
or in the course of the school day (with and among
students, colleagues, families).
*Transforming Curriculum: Creating Multicultural,
Anti-bias, Culturally Relevant Classrooms
This course is designed to help educators understand
the key concepts of multicultural, anti-bias and
culturally relevant teaching practices to support
the academic success of all students.
Effective Effort and Constructive Feedback
This course will provide participants with an
opportunity to explore concepts such as effective
effort and self-confidence. Participants will
learn how to give constructive feedback that promotes
students’ academic and social success in
the school setting, with particular attention
to the impact on students of color.
Using Multicultural Literature to Affirm Identity
This course is designed to encourage K-12 educators
to recognize the importance of affirming the identities
of students and its connection to academic performance.
Participants will have an opportunity to develop
strategies to provide daily affirmations, integrate
historical information and provide a diverse curriculum
that teaches all students to be culturally proficient.
Encouraging Cultural Proficiency in Students
Through the use of interactive and experiential
activities this course will provide educators
with the tools they need to help foster classroom/school
communities that encourage students to understand
and honor diversity both in their schools and
in the larger community.
Multicultural Interactions in the Classroom
This course is designed to provide educators with
some of the tools necessary to create classroom
environments, which incorporate an understanding
and respect for cultural differences and learning
styles.
Strategies for Examining and Addressing the Academic
Achievement Gap
This course considers the importance of understanding
the experiences of students from diverse backgrounds
in narrowing the academic achievement gap.
Teaching Issues of Equity and Social Justice in
the Classroom
This course is designed to help educators develop
and use curriculum materials that encourage students
to develop critical thinking skills around issues
of diversity, equity and social action.
Differentiated Instruction and Assessment
This course will examine the concept of mastery
in a differentiated, standards-based environment,
and what this means for instruction, assessment,
and grading all students, and in particular for
students of color.
*Understanding Racial Identity Development - Providing
Mirrors and Windows
This course examines the role of racial identity
development in school interactions and engagement.
Empowering Parents and Parent Liaisons
This course is designed to provide parents and
parent liaisons with the language and skills to
talk about race and racism with their children
and to partner with the school in preparing children
to be successful global citizens in the 21st century.
Understanding the History of Race and Schooling
This 12 hour 1 credit course will research the
historical connections between race, schooling
and academic achievement.The EMI summer course
schedule will be available in late March.
