March 30,
2010 4:15
PM - 6:15 PM

discussion; and b) using personal response devices for formative assessment and
quizzes

the workshop will be on lesson design (to infuse discussion) and question
design (for assessments). Participants will also have an opportunity to learn
about working with the software and hardware. Our tools will be ACTIVInspire software and Activexpression
devices, though the ideas and concepts we will review and discuss will be
applicable to other interactive whiteboards and personal response devices.

Digital storytelling as a literacy activity in the elementary
school is becoming an effective way for teachers to integrate many concurrent
agendas that are competing for their attention. Digital storytelling allows
teachers to incorporate the 21st Century skills of problem solving,
creativity, and collaboration.
Encouraged by the ideas of Daniel Pink from his book, A Whole New
Mind, teachers will
understand the potential role of storytelling in our studentsÕ new work world.
Participants will work with student-friendly Web 2.0 tools and images. The writing exercises created will be
imaginative storytelling experiences.
Teachers will harness technological abilities and aptitudes that are
already in place in their young students.
The course readings about different motivational approaches will help
teachers to define their own style of digital storytelling.

Why do some of
your students grab everything in sight?
Why do some of your students hum?
Why do some of your students lean on people and walls? Learn the answers
to these questions and develop a sensory diet for your classroom! This course will allow participants to
define sensory integration. They will learn the basic
neuroanatomy/neurophysiology of the sensory systems involved in sensory
integration. Participants will review normal development. They will learn the newly revised theory of Sensory Processing
Disorders. They will identify
aspects of impaired sensory modulation, sensory registration, motor planning,
executive dysfunction, and handwriting.
In addition, teachers will learn how to apply the theory of sensory
integration to the classroom to help their students to attend, to sustain focus
and be more available for learning.
Teachers will also learn how to improve studentsÕ motor development,
academic acquisition, and executive functioning. Lectures, videos, readings, in-depth discussions, research
and case analysis will be used to help develop a sensory diet relevant to their
practices and classrooms.

USING INTERACTIVE
WHITEBOARDS IN THE CLASSROOM:
WORKING WITH STUDENT PERSONAL RESPONSE DEVICES
March 30,
2010 4:15
PM - 6:15 PM
This
interactive workshop will focus on creating lessons and units that use personal
response devices with interactive white boards. Personal response devices give
students an opportunity to give feedback to teachers in real time. We'll look
at two distinct ways of using personal response systems a) to engage students
and allow for their input to guide discussion; and b) using personal response
devices for formative assessment and quizzes.
The focus of
the workshop will be on lesson design (to infuse discussion) and question
design (for assessments). Participants will also have an opportunity to learn
about working with the software and hardware. Our tools will be ACTIVInspire software and Activexpression
devices, though the ideas and concepts we will review and discuss will be
applicable to other interactive whiteboards and personal response devices.

DATA
WAREHOUSE TRAINING: MULTIDIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS (DATA CUBES) – MODULE 202
April 7, 2010 9:00
AM – 12:00 PM
This workshop is the
fourth of four training modules for Data Warehouse Users. While it is not
required to take all four modules in order, doing so will provide you with the
concepts and skills necessary to access and use the reports provided through
the Education Data Warehouse.
In this section you will
be introduced to ÒCubesÓ—predefined data tables that make on-the-fly data
manipulation possible. The course begins with an overview of cubes and the
different kinds of data displays that can be created in Cognos PowerPlay. The
course presents a step-by-step inquiry process for how to build a data display,
as well as instructions about how to utilize all of the Cognos PowerPlay
features. Scenarios and examples are provided throughout the course to assist
you in understanding the context and purpose of various features.
The goal of the course is to build your
capacity to use Cognos PowerPlay to turn a focusing question into a data
display that is engaging and informative. When you publish a data display that
you have created within a cube, it is important that the display you create
appropriately conveys the intended information and is not misleading. If you
are taking this course, chances are that you have some knowledge about using
data analytic tools and/or how to access and use data from a data warehouse, although
you may not be entirely comfortable on both fronts. As a result of this course,
you will have improved your capacity to engage in ad hoc analysis of data while
being guided by focusing and clarifying questions.
